Euro at $1.1197, French 10-year at 5.016%, and a Brent quote the wires do not share

Europe is closed. The euro finished the European afternoon at $1.1197, down 0.15%, and the French 10-year finished at 5.0160%. The oil leg of the same story was not that clean: Friday’s Brent quotes ran from about $112 to $117.

European markets are shut for the weekend. This wire was filed Saturday 24 October in Asia, using Friday’s European close and the New York afternoon readings that were already public. It does not invent a New York fixing.

The currency and the bond that closed#

Reuters reported the euro at $1.1197, down 0.15% on the day, as Europe closed, and the dollar up 0.16% against a basket of peers. The same file said the euro was heading for a weekly loss against the dollar. An earlier Friday Reuters file had the euro near $1.12 and down 0.12% at that moment, on course for a 0.35% weekly loss. The later, more specific spot is $1.1197. The weekly loss was still described as unfinished in the “heading for” sentence, so this wire does not print a weekly percentage of its own.

The French 10-year did finish. Reuters put the close at 5.0160%, down 7.4 basis points. The weekly rise was the largest among major euro-area countries in that report. The German 10-year finished almost unchanged at 3.3426%. Italy’s 10-year fell 3.4 basis points to 4.5784%. Reuters described the French risk premium over Germany as the highest since the euro-area debt crisis in 2011.

That spread is the FX point. A euro at $1.1197 with French cash yields above 5% and Bund yields near 3.34% is a currency being asked to carry a credit story, not only a rate-differential story. The ECB meeting next week does not merge those two. Reuters said the working forecast is an unchanged policy rate, after increases in June and September, and that investors will listen for whether Christine Lagarde treats the French bond move as a market-stability issue.

Oil did not give the euro a single number#

Crude is the inflation channel into that ECB conversation, and Friday did not leave one Brent price.

At the European close Reuters had Brent up 3.51% at $117.14 and WTI up 3.53% at $102.98, and described Brent as the highest since early May. CNBC, earlier in the US morning and then updated, had Brent at $116.46 after touching $117.45, the highest since 30 April, and WTI near $103.12. Yahoo Finance at 2:45 p.m. New York time had Brent near $112 and WTI at $103.

If the euro’s Friday afternoon was being traded against $117 Brent, that is a different inflation impulse from $112 Brent. This wire will not choose. The supply story underneath the bid was consistent across those desks: Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia and concern about further disruption, as Reuters and CNBC both reported.

What is dated for next week, not for tonight#

Moody’s French review was due after the US close on Friday, at 2000 GMT, Reuters said. As of the European close, the decision was still ahead. A rating action is a Monday input if it arrives over the weekend. It was not a completed input in this wire.

The calendar that is already public, via Reuters: the ECB next week, and the UK budget on Wednesday from finance minister John Healey, described as his first. Those are dates. They are not trades.

This wire is informational. It is not an offer, a solicitation, or a view on where the euro opens on Monday.

Frequently asked questions

Is $1.1197 the New York close for the euro?

No. It is the Reuters reading at the European stock close. The dollar session continued after that. A later New York fixing can differ.

Which Brent price should an FX desk use?

For a Friday European-close snapshot, Reuters published $117.14. For a Friday New York afternoon snapshot, Yahoo Finance published a level near $112. They should not be averaged into a fake mid. Use the one that matches the timestamp of the currency quote.

Did Moody’s downgrade France on Friday?

Not in any source used for this note. Reuters said the review was due on Friday evening, after the US close. This wire does not report an outcome.
